Originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge is a suspension bridge over the East River that connects Brooklyn (part of the city of New York) to the island of Manhattan (which is also part of New York City). (Brooklyn however did not become part of the city of New York until 1898.) Its main purpose is for transport from one location to the other, and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States.
